The Silver Shield Presidential Series continues with No Foreign Entanglements.
In his timeless Farewell Address of 1796, George Washington delivered a solemn warning that still echoes through the centuries: America must avoid the snare of permanent foreign alliances and entanglements. With the wisdom of a leader who had guided a fragile new republic through revolution and its earliest trials, he urged his countrymen to cherish their hard-won independence by steering clear of the endless quarrels, intrigues, and power struggles of distant nations. “It is our true policy,” he declared, “to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world,” recognizing that such ties would only invite unnecessary wars, drain the nation’s resources, and compromise the liberty for which so many had sacrificed. Washington’s counsel was not isolationism born of fear, but a profound act of self-preservation—an invitation for America to grow strong, prosperous, and free by focusing first on its own destiny rather than becoming entangled in the ambitions of others
